Clinical trials of drugs are either operational conditions, parabolic flight. or rotation in a laboratory setting. Operational conditions include aerobatic flight. cruising small craft into ocean swells. transatlantic crossin~ by ship. The variations include alterations in the visual field, the use of different constant rates of rotation, or a progressive increase in the rate of rotation after each set of head movements. The end point is usually nausea. Squirrel monkeys of the Bolivian phenotype are tested in a rotating chair similar to that used -. . .. . . . RPM and adds a 15 cm sinusoidal vertical motion at 0.5 Hz (4). Suncus 11l1lrinus, an insectivore. is responsive to a reciprocating shaker. Motion is in the horizontal plane with excursions of 40 mm and a frequency of 1.0 Hz (48). Cats respond to sinusoidal vertical motion or a swing. The laboratory generating drug data uses a device similar to a Ferris wheel, differing mainly in that the subjects ride sideways rather than fore and aft (10). The cats are free to move in plexiglass boxes suspended from the ends of a 0.89 m horizontal beam. The beam rotates at the optimum frequency of 0.28 Hz (17 RPM), which is close to the human optimum of 0.2 Hz.

Unusual presentation of motion sickness: Case report
Introduction: Motion sickness is a normal response to real. Perceived or anticipated movement. Although the prognosis is excellent it may be incapacitating for people with an occupation that requires constant movement, such as a flight attendant, pilot, astronaut, or ship crew members. The symptoms progresses from initial dizziness to vomiting. Fortunaterly most symptoms disappear once the stim...
متن کاملInvestigating the Effect of a Selected Exercise Training Course on the Motion Sickness in Pilots and Flight Crew Members of the Army of the Islamic Republic of Iran
Background and Aim: Motion sickness is a natural and temporary response to unfamiliar motor stimuli which reduces performance in complex tasks that require constant attention. The aim of this research was to study the effect of a special exercise training period on motion sickness in the pilots and flight crews of the Army of the Islamic Republic of Iran. Methods: In this study, 20 pilot studen...
متن کاملNeuronal mechanisms and the treatment of motion sickness.
The aim of this review is to provide an overview of the physiological basis, clinical picture and treatment options for motion sickness. Motion sickness is a well-known nausea and vomiting syndrome in otherwise healthy people. The physical signs of motion sickness occur in both humans and animals during travel by sea, automobile or airplane and in space. Furthermore, some other special situatio...

Two part-task preflight adaptation trainers (PATs) are being developed at the NASA Johnson Space Center to preadapt astronauts to novel sensory stimulus conditions similar to those present in microgravity to facilitate adaptation to microgravity and readaptation to Earth. This activity is a major component of a general effort to develop countermeasures aimed at minimizing sensory and sensorimot...
متن کاملEffects of diphenidol on the central vestibular and visual systems of cats.
It is well known that anticholinergic agents such as atropine and scopolamine are effective as anti-motion sickness drugs, however, the mechanism of action in the vestibular system is inadequately understood. It has been demonstrated by several investigators (1-5) that neurons in the vestibular nucleus are excited by local application of acetylcholine. Gerebtzoff (6) has shown a histochemical l...
متن کاملPrevention and treatment of motion sickness.
Motion sickness is a common syndrome that occurs upon exposure to certain types of motion. It is thought to be caused by conflict between the vestibular, visual, and other proprioceptive systems. Although nausea is the hallmark symptom, it is often preceded by stomach awareness, malaise, drowsiness, and irritability. Early self-diagnosis should be emphasized, and patients should be counseled ab...
